Banyo level crossing precinct upgrade

We have investigated safety and congestion improvements for the Banyo level crossing precinct.

The Banyo Level Crossing Precinct Study investigated options to improve safety, congestion and accessibility. 

The study included a strategic analysis to identify key engineering and planning considerations, and to establish a list of potential short to long term solutions for further investigation.

Key features

To improve the safety and help reduce congestion at the level crossing, the following solutions were identified:

  • intersection upgrades including traffic lights and potential additional westbound lane
  • station accessibility upgrade (being delivered by Queensland Rail)
  • improved pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to and across the level crossing
  • precinct accessibility and movement improvements. 

Study outcome

The study looked at a range of options including:

  • upgrade to the existing level crossing to include traffic lights
  • widening the existing westbound traffic lane to allow for an additional lane at the level crossing
  • pedestrian and cycling infrastructure improvements
  • 3 long term options separating road from rail

The study indicated that an upgrade to the existing level crossing with traffic signals on all approaches is likely to be the most viable short-term option to address traffic congestion and improve safety and active transport accessibility.

Removal of the level crossing may become viable in the long-term however these options have very high capital costs, with considerable property and community impacts. Traffic modelling shows these options will attract additional traffic, including heavy vehicles, further worsening congestion and amenity in the precinct. 

Future planning of long-term solutions will be subject to future growth, consultation with the local community, and will require the support of all 3 levels of government to fund and deliver.

Queensland Rail is responsible for upgrading the Banyo station.

Funding

The Queensland government committed $400,000 to planning for the Banyo level crossing over 2022–23 and 2023–24 (investment ID 1608664).

Current status

The preferred upgrades are not yet fully funded for delivery and require further consideration and consultation with Brisbane City Council (the responsible road manager) and Queensland Rail.
