Bruce Highway (Brisbane - Gympie), Buchanan Road to Caboolture-Bribie Island Road upgrade, business case

The department is planning to upgrade the Bruce Highway from Buchanan Road, Morayfield to Caboolture-Bribie Island, Caboolture.

The planning will identify and assess a long-term solution to meet future traffic growth, reduce congestion and improve efficiency, safety and flood immunity.

Options are being investigated to either add an additional northbound and southbound lane; or add 1-way, 2-lane collector-distributor roads on both sides of the highway between Uhlmann Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road.

Widening into the median in this section is challenging because of the significant number of merges and lane changes that occur in this section, generated by the proximity of the Uhlmann Road, Buchanan Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road interchanges and service centres.

Separating shorter local trips from highway traffic reduces weaving associated with traffic entering and exiting the highway, allowing the highway to operate more efficiently.

The project also includes active transport facilities along the Bruce Highway with connections to local networks.

Benefits

  • Improves safety
  • Increases capacity
  • Improves network efficiency
  • Increases traffic flow
  • Reduces peak hour congestion
  • Reduces interchange queuing
  • Improves flood immunity
  • Accessibility
  • Reduces travel time
  • Contributes to economy
  • Contributes to regional growth
  • Better active transport

Key features

Both options provide for reduced travel times, improved traffic flow and safety by:

  • upgrading the existing Buchanan Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road interchanges
  • upgrading the Bruce Highway bridges over Caboolture River
  • upgrading the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road between the Bruce Highway and Pasturage Road
  • upgrades to the Bruce Highway bridges over the Caboolture River to improve flood immunity
  • providing for active transport facilities from Buchanan Road to Caboolture-Bribie Island Road, with connections to local networks.

Funding
